From Mamtek to Indeeco, this year wasn't plain
and some somber faces around Boonville remain
The lights shine downtown (we have Ameren to thank),
but many right here don't have much in the bank.
Despite what you read or you see all the time,
The meaning of Christmas doesn't end in dot-ninety-nine.
It doesn't even stop when you take down your tree —
it's still cold out, and there's still folks hungry.
"But Drew," you object, "what about me?
I've done well for myself, I've made others see
that the season's for giving, I've done it before.
I put a buck in the bucket upon leaving the store."
Well, you've got the idea, now, don't you fret,
But Father Christmas isn't done with you yet.
There's soup kitchens and shelters who will take your aid,
and a food pantry or two that need your help to crusade.
But, au contraire, if you're not the adventurous sort,
there's a simpler way to build a good rapport
with your down-and-out neighbors in a petulant miff:
"Is there anything that I could help you guys with?"
It's all fine and swell to spend time with your kin,
to enjoy a good talk over some whiskey or gin.
But Christmas is about giving to get what you lack
And to build others up with a pat on the back.
Enjoy your Christmas (though it may not be white)
but keep in mind all the others that night
who might not be as lucky as you or me
with a home, food, drink and family.
