The first Daytona 500

 The first Daytona 500 took place on February 22, 1959. Forty-one thousand fans watched as fifty-nine cars competed for a total purse of $67,760. It was a photo-finish, but Johnny Beauchamp was the “unofficial” winner. Three days later, Lee Arnold Petty was declared the winner of the first Daytona 500.
