Polio vaccine and Dr. Jonas Salk

FEBRUARY 23  

 On October 28, 1914, Jonas Salk was born in New York City. His original plan was to study law, but became fascinated with medical science. In the 1940s, Dr. Salk began looking for a cure against polio. On February 23, 1954, children at Arsenal Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, received the first polio vaccine.

 Thanks to blogposter01 for giving me the correct answer. After re-checking my sources, I found that I misread the article and my answer was incorrect. Joe Weatherly was in the photo-finish, but wasn’t on his last lap when Petty took the checked flag.
