  • The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team continued its run through the conference Monday night by leading the Class 4 Hannibal Pirates from start to finish for a convincing 68-24 victory.
The Lady Pirates, 18-2 overall and 8-0 in the NCMC, finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field and 69 percent from the foul line and also had eight different players in the scoring column.
But more importantly, the Lady Pirates took care of business from the opening tip off and led by as much as 30 going into the fourth quarter.
“We started off rusty but got it going in the second quarter with Morgan (Edwards) taking control in the inside scoring 12 points,” said Boonville girls coach Jaryt Hunziker. “Our guards did a great job of creating turnovers out top by being aggressive and setting good traps. The effort continued into the second half where we had a 33 point lead going into the final quarter. We are still struggling to get our outside game going by shooting 1 for 13 behind the arc. Hopefully, we can start knocking some of those down in the final five games and into the postseason. It was a great team effort tonight.”
Of course it didn’t hurt that Boonville started the game with 10 straight points or that they dominated the boards by a 3-1 margin 40-12.
But then to add salt to the wound, Boonville junior Morgan Edwards used her presence inside in the second quarter by scoring eight of the team’s 10 points during a two-minute stretch to extend the lead to 18 at 24-6.
Boonville led 14-3 after one and then stretched to lead to 25 (40-15) at the break by outscoring Hannibal 26-12. The Lady Pirates also burned the nets in the second by hitting 9 of 14 shots from the field for 64 percent.
Needless to say the Lady Pirates continued to force the issue against Hannibal in the second half while holding a 15-7 advantage to extend the lead to 33 at 55-22. Boonville also hit on 5 of 9 shots from the field in the third.
However with a running clock in place to start the fourth quarter, the Lady Pirates all but sealed the victory by reeling off 10 straight points to make it 65-22 with 1:57 left.
Boonville’s defense also set the tone in the second half by holding Hannibal to a total of nine points.
As for the scoring, Edwards finished the game with 19 points along with seven rebounds and one assist.
Paige Peterson chipped in 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and one assist while Aly Wessing added eight points, eight rebounds, one steal and one assist, Paige Renfrow with eight points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist, Cassidy Renfrow with seven points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal, Hannah Fuemmeler with six points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Olivia Imhoff with five points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal, Millie Moyer with two points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists and Whitney Bush with one rebound.
