The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team picked the wrong time to play perhaps its worst game of the season Saturday in the championship in the California Invitational Tournament.
While facing third-seeded Jeff City for the title, the Lady Pirates knew they would have to play almost flawless basketball to beat the Class 5 school.
Unfortunately for Boonville, they were a long way from flawless basketball while shooting only 19 percent from the field and 57 percent from the foul line in a 47-19 drubbing.
In other games in the tournament, Southern Boone edged Fulton 61-59 in the fifth-place game while Battle turned back California 48-43 for third place.
Boonville Lady Pirates basketball coach Jaryt Hunziker said no effort on the boards and going 6 for 36 from the field (eight points in three quarters) was the difference.
“When you let Jeff City dominate the boards with 19 offensive boards you will not win too many games,” Hunziker said. “They did a great job of exploding to the ball when we just stood and watched it come off the boards. I felt we came out and got the ball inside right away for some easy looks to go up by five but then Morgan Edwards picked up her second foul which really hurt us. Jeff City looked like they were playing with a lot of emotion which we didn’t match. Defensively, we tried to change it up with some zones and man defense but JC continued to hit shots from the outside and have their way inside. I’m glad that we don’t have to set around for a number of days and replay the game in our heads. We have Hannibal on Monday. We need to bounce back from this game on Monday with a good showing at Hannibal.”
The game tonight against Hannibal couldn’t come soon enough for the Lady Pirates, who were dominated on the boards 48-22.
Nonetheless, Boonville kept the game close for the first quarter while trailing JC 14-11.
What happened after that is anybodys guess as Jeff City outscored Boonville 13-2 to lead at the half by a score of 27-13.
The Lady Pirates also failed to score a basket in the second period while getting both shots from the line by Paige Renfrow with 6:38 left to cut the lead to 16-13.
In all, Boonville finished the second quarter 0 for 5 from the field and was 5 for 14 from the field in the first half.
Although the 14-point deficit was still within reason, that quickly fell by the wayside in the third quarter as Jeff City came out and reeled off five straight points to up the lead to 18 at 31-13.
Boonville sophomore Millie Moyer, meanwhile, scored the Lady Pirates only basket in the period at the 5:49 mark to make it 31-15. However it was all Jeff City the rest of the way as the Lady Jays went on another 8-0 run to closeout the third quarter at 39-15.
While finishing the third quarter 1 for 10 from the field, the Lady Pirates were also outscored 12-2 in the period.
Of course it got worse before it got better for Boonville in the final period as JC came out and outscored the Lady Pirates again 8-4 to win by 28.
Megan Foster had 16 points while Kezia Martin tossed in 11 for Jeff City.
As for the scoring in the game for Boonville, Morgan Edwards had six points, five rebounds and two steals.
Aly Wessing finished the game with five points, three rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot while Paige Renfrow added two points, two steals and two assists, Olivia Imhoff with two points and three steals, Millie Moyer with two points, two steals, one rebound and one assist, Hannah Fuemmeler with two points, Paige Peterson and Cassidy Renfrow each with four rebounds.
