Madison girls upend New Franklin, 23-20

The New Franklin boys ninth grade basketball team remained perfect on the season by beating the Sturgeon Bulldogs 34-28 in the championship in the CAC Tournament Friday night in Sturgeon.
The Bulldogs, 4-0 on the season, trailed Sturgeon 14-13 at the half before rallying back with a 21-14 advantage in the final-two periods for the victory.
New Franklin coach Jim Schlotzhauer said the boys pulled out a nice win against Sturgeon.
“We got off to a slow start, but stayed with it and took the lead early in the second half,” Schlotzhauer said. “We moved the ball better to increase our scoring in the second half.”
Bailey Lyons and Sid Hendrix each had 10 points in the game for New Franklin while Brendan Hundley and Mason Bailey added four points each, Hunter Rohlfing with three and Austin Jones with two.
Sturgeon was led by Jessie Roberts with nine.
As for the New Franklin girls, they fell to Madison in the third-place game by a score of 23-20.
The Lady Bulldogs, dropping to 4-3 on the season, trailed Madison 13-5 at the half and 17-9 after three quarters of play before rallying back with a 11-6 scoring edge in the final period.
New Franklin coach Chris McGowan said Madison is one of the few teams who is just big, or maybe even bigger, than our group of girls.
“We struggled to adjust to their height, and it presented us with problems throughout the game,” McGowan said. “The post moves that normally work didn’t work against them, and we struggled to come up with a counter to their height. We made a couple of good runs throughout the game but just couldn’t quite make up the difference.”
Madison Matney and Kacie White each had six points for New Franklin while Grace Hundley added five, Chloe Dobson two and Teagan Chesire with one.
