Tiger boys fall to Eagles 31-19
The Pilot Grove girls junior high basketball team remained perfect on the season by turning back Otterville 30-25 in CCAA action Monday night in Pilot Grove.
The Lady Tigers, 6-0 on the season, led Otterville 11-7 at the half and 20-16 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Pilot Grove outscored Otterville 10-9.
Pilot Grove coach Landon Daniel said it’s tough to beat a team three times, but the girls pulled it off.
“The girls started off fast but we struggled all night on the offensive end with making layups and not hitting free throws when we made it to the line,” Daniel said. “Tonight was a struggle as Otterville continues to get better, but the girls hung tough and I’m proud of them for their effort and stepping up when it mattered the most. We hope to maintain our pace this week with two more games against Sweet Springs and Bunceton.”
Emily Schupp had the team-high for Pilot Grove with eight points. Regan Walker chipped in six while Melanie Wolfe added five, Kaitlen Weekly and Cathlynn Hardt each with four, Kylee Sprick with two and Madison Kempf with one.
For Otterville, Abby Nichols had 12 points.

The Otterville boys outscored Pilot Grove 11-2 in the first quarter and never looked back, beating the Tigers in CCAA action Monday night in Pilot Grove.
The Eagles led by only two (13-11) at the half but pulled away with a 18-8 advantage in the final-two periods.
Pilot Grove coach Derek Skaggs said the boys came out and struggled early in the first quarter putting points on the board and it was much of the difference in the ballgame.
“For the remainder of the game we played right with them as we made a few adjustments defensively,” Skaggs said. “We were able to close the gap to as little as three points before they went on another run of their own. I am starting to see some great basketball instinct decisions on the floor from our guys and that to me is huge because it shows me that they are starting to feel the game. The guys are battling every night on the floor and continue to work hard.”
Zumsteg had 18 points and Saltsgaver 10 for Otterville.
For Pilot Grove, Anderson Twenter had eight, Austin Kollmeyer three and Laben Twenter, Ethan Williams, Gavin Shepherd and Layton Streck each with two.
