The Boonville Pirates junior varsity football team put up a good fight while battling Class 6 Columbia Hickman Monday night in Columbia.
Although the Pirates finished on the losing in against the Kewpies 24-6, JV coach Joe Henke said the kids battled out there against a much bigger program. “I am proud of the effort our kids played with tonight,” Henke said. “I thought we moved the ball well all night, but the same type of problems that have plagued us all year came up. We had a few drives stall out because of penalties and costly turnovers.”
Henke said the Pirates hit paydirt first in the game on a 68-yard pass from quarterback Nick Zeitlow to Tyler Johnson to go up 6-0. Then, right before the half with 45 seconds left, Henke said the Kewpies came back with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to lead Boonville 8-6.
The Pirates never got any closer in the ballgame as Hickman came back with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the second half for the victory.
