  • The Boonville Lady Pirates softball team put a stamp on the regular season finale last night by beating the New Franklin Lady Bulldogs 7-3.
The Lady Pirates, who begin district play on Thursday at Oak Grove, closed out the regular season at 16-7. As for the Lady Bulldogs, who finished at 17-7, they will begin district play tonight in Pilot Grove against eighth-seeded Otterville starting at 4 p.m.
Although the Lady Pirates beat New Franklin earlier in the season in the Lady Pirate Lead-Off Classic 7-0, this game was a little closer as the Lady Bulldogs trailed at one point 4-3 in the bottom-half of the fifth.
Both teams also played to a 0-0 tie for the first-three innings before Boonville broke out on top in the top-half of the fourth when Havyn Monteer led off with a triple to left and score on the RBI-single up the middle by Courtney Timm. Junior Addy Reardon then hit the first of her two-home runs to center to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Lady Pirates also added another run in the fifth on the RBI by Timm to make it 4-0.
Needless to say, the game was far from being over at that point. Although the Lady Bulldogs threatened several times in the first-four innings, they finally got on the board in the bottom-half of the fifth thanks to three Boonville errors along with two walks and one hit.
Of course the inning started well for the Lady Pirates as pitcher Michelle Surratt got Abby Prewitt to fly out to left. Then, after back-to-back walks to Cassie Armentrout and Aly Hundley, senior Sara Montgomery reached on a fielder’s choice after a high throw to third to score the first run. Claire Monnig then reached on a hard hit back to the pitcher to score another run to make it 4-2.
The inning was far from over, though. New Franklin’s Aislinn Himmelberg reached on another error after freshman Kiley Barnes dropped a fly ball to second to score a run to cut the lead to 4-3. Boonville then caught a break when Barnes tagged second on the dropped ball for the force out for the second out in the inning. Then, after Kalani Pihana reached on an error by the shortstop, Surratt came back and got Megan Phillips on a strikeout to end the inning.
New Franklin never got any closer in the ballgame as Boonville came back with one run in the sixth on singles each by Addy Reardon and Michelle Surratt and a fly out to left for a RBI by Taylor Ellebracht. Then, in the seventh, Boonville tacked on two more runs when Monteer led off with a triple to score and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Imhoff to make it 6-3. Reardon then hit her second home run of the game to deep center to closeout the scoring in the ballgame.
Page 2 of 3 - Boonville Lady Pirates softball coach Christie Zoeller said the girls had a slow start in this game.
“The long bus ride must of tired us out,” Zoeller said jokingly, “but I am glad to see some of our hitters peaking at this point in the season. I know it is exciting for them to come up with big hits and it sure is fun to watch. Havyn and Addy both did a great job at the plate tonight, getting all of the ball and hitting it hard. Our pitchers both did a good job on the mound tonight as well, and our defense was much improved from last night.
“It is always fun to play a game with New Franklin. I can remember when I was in high school and always feeling the rivalry between us and them and it’s fun to see that the friendly rivalry is still going on 15 years later. I am proud of the way the girls played and I hope to ride this win into district play.”
Michelle Surratt picked up the win in the circle for Boonville while Kalani Pihana took the loss for New Franklin. In five innings, Surratt gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Kiley Barnes then came in and pitched two innings in relief and yielded one hit while striking out one.
For New Franklin, Pihana went the distance and gave up seven runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out one batter.
As for the hitting in the game for Boonville, Addy Reardon went 3-for-4 with a single, two home runs and three RBIs. Havyn Monteer was perfect at the plate with one single and two doubles while Michelle Surratt added two singles, Courtney Timm with one single and two RBIs, Millie Moyer also with one single and Taylor Ellebracht with one RBI.
For New Franklin, Aly Hundley went 2-for-3 with two singles while Claire Monnig added one single and one RBI and Sara Montgomery, Kalani Pihana, Valerie Schlotzhauer and Cassie Armentrout each with one single.
New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said he was happy with the effort and the teams approach toward the game. “We played better at all phases  of the game than last week,” Dowell said. “I hope we play this hard all week.”
In the JV game, Boonville defeated New Franklin by a score of 10-3 in three innings.
The Lady Pirates never trailed in the game against New Franklin and led 8-0 after one and 10-1 after two. Meanwhile, in the third, the Lady Bulldogs rallied back with two runs.
Boonville JV coach Stacey Bishop said the girls did an excellent job of being disciplined at the plate. “We waited for good pitches to hit and took advantage of that,” Bishop said. “These girls were smart and aggressive on the basepaths. What a great way to end the JV season.”
