  • The Brookfield Bulldogs got off of the bus ready to play this past Friday on their trip to Shelbina for a Clarence Cannon Conference battle with the South Shelby Cardinals.   This road win will hopefully give the team momentum as they begin this road trip.
Early on, Brookfield’s defense looked en route to forcing South Shelby into a three-and-out.   But the punt was recovered by the Cardinals, and they got new life.   But a key third down stuff from Reed McBroom would force South Shelby to take a shot on fourth down.   Brycen Corf would deflect the screen pass to force the turnover on downs.
The teams would exchange possessions for the rest of the opening quarter, and into the second frame.   On their second possession of the second quarter, Brookfield would break the game open with a score.
After an interception from Cort Speichinger, which was returned to the South Shelby six yard line, McBroom would score on a four-yard touchdown.   Arturo Huerta added the point-after.

South Shelby would go three-and-out on their next drive.   A flag would put the Dogs at the 50 yard line to start what would end as a scoring possession.
A run by JJ Abongo would reset the down marker.   Three plays later, another long run, this time from Zach Bragg, would earn another first down.   On a fourth down play, Abongo would break off a 34-yard run for a Brookfield touchdown.   Huerta added the point-after.

A tackle for a loss by Dean Gall would end the opening half.
    Halftime - Brookfield 14   South Shelby 0
Brookfield would earn a first down on their opening drive of the second half.   This came on runs from McBroom and Abongo.   A fumble two plays later would end the drive.
South Shelby would take advantage of the turnover, driving 72 yards on six plays.   The touchdown came on a 14-yard touchdown pass.   The extra point was faked, and the resulting run was good for the conversion.
    Q3 7:14 - Brookfield 14   South Shelby 8
The remainder of the game would be spent with South Shelby looking like they were heading to tie the game, and the Brookfield defense getting key stops.   A pair of late interceptions by Anthony Cupp would stop threats from the Cardinals.
In the end, a game ending sack from Matt Teter would put a ribbon on this road win.
    Final - Brookfield 14   South Shelby 8
Next week, the Dogs remain on the road, and will take on Palmyra, who have taken the state by storm this season.
