Losing in the bottom-half of the seventh in the opening game of the North Callaway Tournament wasn’t exactly what the New Franklin Lady Bulldogs softball team had in mind over the weekend.
Although New Bloomfield was a three seed and New Franklin six, the Lady Bulldogs fell short by a score of 5-4.
Of course New Franklin had a better showing in its next-two games by beating Van Far 6-1 and Linn 7-6 to win consolation.
In the game against New Bloomfield, the Lady Bulldogs led 3-2 after four and 4-3 after 6 1/2 before giving up two runs in the bottom-half of the seventh to suffer the loss.
New Franklin coach Ross Dowell said his team had three errors all at the same time along with a couple of mental errors. “We never really got a rally going in the early innings and left nine runners in scoring position,” Dowell said. “We should have won this game.”
Kalani Pihana took the loss in the circle for New Franklin by giving up five runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out three.
Senior Aly Hundley had the only extra base hit in the game for New Franklin, being a double. Abby Prewitt, Kalani Pihana and Cassie Armentrout each had one single and one RBI while Claire Monnig finished the game with one single.
In the second game against Van Far, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to stay while pushing across three runs in each of the third and fourth innings of play.
Dowell said timely hitting to go with some walks helped the Lady Bulldogs in this game.
“Defense got us out of a lot of big innings,” Dowell said. “We had two big double plays. Megan Phillips kept the ball down and the defense supported her. This was a good win after a tough loss.”
Megan Phillips picked up the win in the circle for New Franklin. In six innings, Phillips gave up just one run on seven hits while striking out three batters.
Claire Monnig had two singles and two RBIs in the game for the Lady Bulldogs while Aly Hundley added two singles, Abby Prewitt with one triple and three RBIs and Cassie Armentrout with one single.
In the final game against Linn, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 4-1 after the first inning and 6-3 after five before rallying back with four runs in the bottom-half of the sixth for the one-run victory.
Dowell said his team put a string of hits together to win the game. “I’m still shocked,” Dowell said. “We showed a lot of heart to win this game. We did not hit well until the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Cassie Armentrout had a walk off single to win the game for us. We have two huge conference games this week.”
Claire Monnig picked up the win in the circle for New Franklin. In six innings, Monnig gave up six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter.
New Franklin also out-hit Linn 8-6, with Aly Hundley going 2-for-4 with a single, triple and two RBIs.
Cassie Armentrout was 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBIs while Megan Phillips added a single and one RBI and Claire Monnig, Derian Dodson and Sara Montgomery each with one single.
