The Boonville Pirates junior varsity football team fell short Monday night at home against the Marshall Owls by a score of 16-8.
Although the loss dropped Boonville to 0-2 on the season, JV head coach Joe Henke said he was proud of their effort in the second half. “We have young kids playing and they came out with a little bit more desire and we made some plays. Ezra Perry had a good hard running game. We caught some passes but some penalties caught up with us. However, I thought we tackled better. We could have laid down and took a bucket after they went up 16-0 but they came back and executed that on-side kick there at the end and made it fun.”
Of course coach Henke probably was thinking otherwise in the first half as the Pirates fumbled the ball on their opening series after a 11-play drive down to the Marshall 30 and then watched the Owls drive the ball 70 yards on seven plays for the score with 8:54 left in the half.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Maupin hit paydirt on a 3-yard run to put the Owls on top 6-0. Then, on the two-point conversion to make it 8-0, Maupin found sophomore Garrett Clouse all alone in the back of the end zone.
The Pirates again had chances after that while keeping a drive going on a roughing the punter penalty. However, after later punting the ball, freshman Keandre Anderson recovered a fumble in Boonville territory. Then, with Marshall driving the ball again inside the Pirates 10, freshman Nick Zeitlow came back and picked off a pass from Maupin in the end zone to thwart the drive and end the half.
The second half was also back and forth with Boonville and Marshall playing to a defensive standstill in the third quarter. Then, with 6:37 left in the game, the Owls struck again on a 6-yard run by Maupin to extend the lead to 14-0. Maupin would come back and hit Xander Richardson on the two-point conversion to give Marshall a 16-0 lead.
Down by two touchdowns with a little over six minutes to play, the Pirates battled back and moved the ball 62 yards for the score when freshman running back Ezra Perry hit paydirt on a 12-yard scamper with 2:08 left. Meanwhile, on the two-point conversion, Zeitlow threw the ball up to receiver Makiah Waibel, who came down with it between two Marshall defenders to cut the lead in half at 16-8.
Boonville also had no choice but to go for the onside kick, which was recovered by Waibel at the Marshall 48. Meanwhile, after moving the ball to the Owls 39, the Pirates had no choice but to go for it on fourth down. Unfortunately for Boonville, they fell short on the first down as Marshall held on for the victory.
Page 2 of 2 - Ezra Perry led Boonville’s JV in rushing with 17 carries for 116 yards and one touchdown. Zeitlow, meanwhile, completed 2 of 8 passes for 16 yards and one touchdown.
Makiah Waibel had one catch for 11 yards and one score while Weston Fahrenbrink added one catch for 5 yards. Fahrenbrink also carried the ball two times for 7 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Remington Hammers had two solo stops and six assisted tackles.
Weston Fahrenbrink finished the game with one solo stop and four assisted tackles while Keandre Anderson added one solo stop, three assisted tackles and one fumble recovery, Devlin Carter with one solo stop and three assisted tackles, Lucas Gerke, Nick Zeitlow and Ezra Perry each with one solo stop and two assisted tackles, Anthony Reasons and Makiah Waibel with one solo stop and one assisted tackle each, Andrew Garrison with two assisted tackles, Dylan Kaiser with one solo stop and Greg Harris with one assisted tackle.
Boonville’s JV football team will play next on Monday, Sept. 16th at Hannibal starting at 6 p.m.
