Cooper County continues movement

Cooper County—Cooper County continues to make great progress in being a Certified Work Ready Community.  Just a few short weeks ago Cooper County which is a portion of Moberly Area Economic Development Corporation’s service region was named a Certified Work Ready Community In Progress.  Having earned this designation has set the four-county region apart in terms of its workforce development efforts.
“We truly have a skilled workforce in our region,” says Corey Mehaffy, President of Moberly Area Economic Development.  “Becoming a Certified Work Ready Community is a partnership between our business community and our education professionals to continue to develop the skills of the next generation worker.”
Thirty-six employers in the region involved the industries of manufacturing, financial services; food service, education; health care and local government have all agreed to recognize the National Career Readiness Certificate as a credential of a perspective employee’s skills.  Seven of those partnering employers are located in Cooper County.
The National Career Readiness Certificate is earned when a perspective employee completes the Work Keys assessment which gauges their skills in the areas of reading, comprehension, math and the ability to problem solve.  “These are all important skills that employers need,” said Mehaffy.  “Our partnership is moving the effort to improve these skills to a higher level that will improve worker performance.”
The partnership for the enhanced development of worker skills included five educational institutions in the region.  Four school districts have joined the partnership along with Moberly Area Community College.  “We appreciate the partnership of our education institutions in this project”, said Mehaffy.  “The community colleges and vocational training centers in the region are a vital portion of preparing our workforce for future opportunities.”
