I remember when my obsession with all things coconut started – as a young lad in preschool.

I still remember Mrs. Linez (the spelling may be off, I was 4-years-old the last time I saw her) cracking coconuts one day and giving everyone a little coconut milk.

That was more than 30 years ago, and the coconut obsession remains. I drink coconut water, coconut coffee and coconut soda, and coconut encrusted shrimp is a favorite of mine.

But, above all else, I’m obsessed with coconut beer. My life would be happy if every brewery in the country brewed at least one coconut beer.

I can still remember the first time I had a coconut beer. It was on May 28, CoCoNut-PorTeR-Sticker2008, in Montreal. I was at the Mondial de La Biere, and one of the beer tents had Maui CoCoNut Porter. I tried it and I loved it and my goal for more coconut beers was born.

The CoCoNut Porter was good, but I thought there could be even more coconut flavor in a beer. The next time I got to try a coconut beer was in June of 2009.

A friend and myself had taken a trip to Pittsburgh to check out the local beer scene. One of the stops was at the Church Brew Works. Listed on the menu was “rotating stout,” so I asked what the stout was. Nonchalantly, the waitress responded with “coconut stout.” At least I think she said stout because once she started saying “coconut,” I said, “I’ll have that.”

I remember every coconut beer I have ever had. Guest blogger Andrew Kuhn brewed a decent one a couple of years ago. The Stone Brewing Company brewed the Ken Schmidt/Maui/Stone Kona Macadamia Coconut Porter a few years ago and I’ve never bought so many of a Stone special release as that.

The Kona Brown Nut Brown Ale, made with toasted coconut is the only six-pack I’ve purchased from Kona and Joe Z’s Coconut Porter brewed by Wormtown Brewery in Worcester was a treat for me.

The ultimate happened last year when, after two years of pestering Wormtown’s Ben Roesch about brewing  of a chocolate/coconut stout, he agreed to brew one to shut me up.

Norm_LabelLast August, Norm made its debut. It was liquid heaven. A liquid mounds bar with more body and better flavors – and alcohol. It was exactly what I envisioned when I was bothering Roesch. Look for it later this year in bombers.

There have been others over the years, but far too few. The latest is the newest Stone collaboration – the Robert Masterson & Ryan Reschan/Rip Current/Stone R&R Coconut IPA.

I’ll be writing a full review of this beer later this week, but I’ll give you a preview – I really liked it.

I know that my hope that all breweries will start brewing a coconut beer  is not likely, but maybe it’ll just happen. Maybe the next Founders Breakfast Stout can be called “Tropical Breakfast,” but a man can dream, can’t he?
