  • Showmanship took center stage during the opening day of the Prairie Home Fair as sheep and goats were showcased by their young owners.
A little rumble of thunder and some drizzle did little to deter the fair as it entered into its 98th year. While few people were gathered on the main grounds of the fair most were gathered to see sheep and goats in a building on the west end of the grounds.
An array of awards were handed out for first though third places, including overall grand champions in each category.
Bailey Young won Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion in the ewe sheep class.
"I feel kind of happy I got Grand Champion. I will go off to the Missouri State Fair and see what I can do there," Young said.
She said she has put a tremendous amount of work into her sheep project.
"When I got them, they did not look too good. I worked with them ever since," Young said.
The goat show followed soon after the sheep exited the arena.
Morgan Beach, who has been participating in the fair for 10 years, said it is nice to come every year to support the fair. Beach won Grand Champion in the yearling goat division.
"I guess after enough years of breeding goats you eventually end up at the top. It is nice to see after so many years," Beach said.
