Boonslick People First is an area organization run by and for individuals with disabilities. The organization is part of the much larger People First international organization.
Advisor of the group, Amanda Himmelberg answered some questions regarding the group following their Tuesday afternoon meeting at Sisters Supportive Living on Ryan Street.
What is the organization about?
Boonslick People First is a group for developmental disadvantaged individuals. The group teaches how an individual can advocate for themselves and others and allows individuals to meet special friends. Individuals in the group can participate in fundraisers and special events.
How many are in the organization?
We have 45-50 individuals from Cooper and Howard County.
What is the most special thing the organization does each year?
Last year we started the Fall Formal. It gives our members the opportunity to dress formally while enjoying an evening of dinner and dancing.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
We have individuals from a variety of providers who attend the group. Sisters Supportive Living provides oversight to assist in the organizations operations.
Questions about the group can be directed to Himmelberg at 660-537-0055. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month between the hours of 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Sister's Supportive Living. Dues are $2, which are collected at each meeting.
