  • Over 5,000 pounds of food along with $872 in donations were gathered in Boonville last Saturday during the United Postal Service's  'Stamp out Hunger' food collection event. With help from the United States Postal Service along with area volunteers, food was collected at local residences.
In a letter submitted by Bob Horst, he thanked God, the donors and volunteers for their generosity in donating food and money to benefit the less fortunate in the community.
The money collected will be given to the Central Missouri Food Bank located in Columbia to purchase food to be sent back to the local pantries because they are able to purchase items at a much lower cost than a single food pantry can.
"They can buy more with a dollar than we can," Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Pantry President Chuck Harris said.
Harris said the Central Missouri Food Bank was very instrumental in organizing the food drive as well.
"There has been tremendous generosity from the public. Getting all this in one day says the community is willing to help those who are less fortunate," Harris said.
Harris said the amount of food collected covered the entire floor of the pantry's large truck when they picked it up from the post office Saturday and Monday.
The food will be distributed in food bags to individuals who seek help from the pantry.
