The Boonville Pirates baseball team had a combination of good pitching, timely hitting and excellent defense while beating the Mexico Bulldogs 5-1 in the semifinal round of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament last night in Fulton.
The Pirates, 14-8 on the season, out-hit Mexico 8-6 and committed just one error in seven innings.
As for the pitching, junior Chase Snapp picked up the victory by scattering one run over 4 1/3 innings on five hits and two walks. He also struck out four batters. Sophomore Ethan Sander, meanwhile, picked up the save by giving up just one hit over 2 2/3 innings while striking out five.
Boonville Pirates baseball coach Tim Edwards said Snapp did an outstanding job improving his record to 4-1 on the year.
“In the fifth inning, Test reached on an error and then Sampo got a single through the left side,” Edwards said. “After a fly out to left field by Bracht, Creed singled through the right side to load the bases. We brought in Ethan Sander to pitch and he struck out the 3 and 4 hole hitters to keep Mexico scoreless in the inning. It was a huge spot in the game and Ethan really came through. Ethan was in command and struck out five of the eight hitters he faced in 2 2/3 innings, giving up only one hit. We are playing great baseball right now with a lot of energy. I know Kirksville will be a tough test, as they are an outstanding, senior-laden team that just won their 20th game of the season last night. We are excited to be playing in another district championship game and will give it our best effort.”
Boonville also jumped out on top with one run in the bottom-half of the second only to have Mexico rally back with one in the fourth to tie the game at 1-all. However, in the bottom-half of the fourth, the Pirates sent four more runs across to garner the victory.
Ethan Sander also led the hitting attack in the game for Boonville with two singles and two RBIs.
Keaton Barnes was also 2-for-2 with two singles, a sacrifice bunt and two runs scored while Zach Nixon added a single and scored two runs, Dallas Franklin with one single and one run scored and Jalen Poindexter and Alec Viertel each with one single.
Cody Creed took the loss on the hill for Mexico by giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five batters in five innings. Gavin Jones then came in and pitched one inning in relief and surrendered one hit while striking out one.
Austin Sampo went 2-for-3 in the game for Mexico while Tyler Bracht, Cody Creed, Dylan Nance and Jake Willer finished the game with one hit.
