  • The Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team had every incentive to finish the regular season on a high note last night at the BHS Sports Complex.
After learning that they had just picked up the No. 1 seed in the district tournament next week in Boonville, the Lady Pirates seemed to have no answer for Kirksville's attack while giving up two first-half goals in a 5-2 loss.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 9-8 overall and 4-7 in the NCMC, head coach Tim Brown said once again, the Lady Pirates just could not seem to keep up with the new and improved Kirksville attacking personnel. "We definitely had more possessions and probably had more chances in the first half, but we gave up two counterattack goals and were not able to climb back out of the hole," Brown said.
The Lady Pirates definitely found themselves in a hole early against Kirksville while giving up goals at the 6 and 35 minute mark in the first half. However, in the second half of the match, Boonville found itself in even deeper water as the Lady Tigers answered with two more goals at the 43 and 44 minute mark to make it 4-0. Then, at the 47 minute mark in the match, senior Bailey Pfeiffer assisted senior McKenna McAreavy on a goal from 10 yards out to cut the lead to three at 4-1. Meanwhile, after Kirksville added another goal at the 48 minute mark to go up 5-1, Boonville came back with its second goal of the match on an assist from freshman Kayla Cotten to Pfeiffer at the 77 minute mark.
Kirksville also finished the match with 17 shots on goal and 24 shot attempts while Boonville had eight shots on goal and 17 shot attempts.
The Lady Tigers also had seven fouls in the match compared to six for Boonville.
Boonville junior goalie Cassidy Renfrow, meanwhile, finished the match with 12 saves.
As for the JV match, Boonville defeated Kirksville by a score of 3-0 after playing to a 0-0 tie at the half.
The Lady Pirates, 5-3-4 overall, scored their first goal of the match at the 38 minute mark on an assist from Alyssa Dell to Jessi Matney. Then, at the 45 minute mark, Cotten assisted Dell on a shot to extend the lead to 2-0. Meanwhile, on the final goal of the match, sophomore Angie Carney-Jackson picked up her first goal of the season at the 54 minute mark.
Boonville's JV also finished the match with 12 shots on goal and 22 shot attempts while Kirksville added only one shot on goal and two shot attempts.
The Lady Pirates also had six fouls in the match compared to just two for Kirksville.
As for saves, Boonville freshman goalie Haylee Thomas had one in the match.
Brown said after a frustrating first half, the JV Lady Pirates found the finishing touch with three unanswered goals.
