Local salons raise $220 for cancer
Beauty shops around Boonville are competing to see who can raise the most funds for Cooper County Relay for Life in 'Cutting for a Cure.' The funds will be used to help fund the research for a cure for the disease.
Cooper County Relay for Life Committee member Courtney Ray, who works at Uptown Girlz Hair Company, set up the event, which asked for donations at beauty shops around Boonville. The shops sold footprints for $1 from March 25-April 25. The footprints were displayed with the donating individual's name on them. Ray said 90 percent of the local shops participated in the event, including Uptown Girls, A Touch of Claas, Headlines, Intensive Hair, Designing Women, Show Me Cuts, Smart Styles and Rockn' Hair.
"I thought it would be great to get us all together to raise money for cancer research," Ray said.
Ray approached Linda Claas, owner of A Touch of Claas, about the fundraiser. Claas said she thought it was a great idea, especially when the funds are spent helping out each other.
"I wanted to help provide funds for a cure. I have had several family members who have died from cancer," Claas said.
The shops raised a total of $220. Uptown Girlz collected the most out of all the shops with a total of $97.
Ray said she was happy with the outcome of the event.
A plaque will be awarded for their efforts at the Cooper County Relay for Life, which will be held at the Boonslick Heartland YMCA.
