For the second time in as many seasons, the NCMC Golf Tournament came down to a freshman winning the tournament.
Last year at Hail Ridge Golf Course in Boonville, freshman Brett Windsor surprised the field by winning a playoff on No. 1 to grab the title. Fast forward to yesterday at Heritage Hills Country Club in Moberly on the 18-hole, par 70 course.
While separated by just two strokes, freshman Jack Baumann of Hannibal edged defending champion Brett Windsor of Boonville 74-76.
As a team, the Pirates fared even worse while finishing seventh out of seven teams.
Hannibal captured the team title with a score of 307, followed by Marshall at 322, Moberly at 332, Fulton at 337, Mexico at 341, Kirksville at 347 and Boonville at 376.
Boonville Pirates golf coach Seth Pirtle said the team could have performed better at the conference tournament.
"Our goal this year was to place in the top five for team scores," Pirtle said. "Obviously, we did not accomplish this. I am happy that Brett won second individual all conference honors. Hopefully we will perform better Monday at districts."
While shooting a 6-over par 76 for 18 holes, Windsor was also one shot back after the first nine holes on Wednesday by trailing only Marshall's Alex Maupin. Maupin fired a round of 35 on the front nine while Windsor shot a 36. Jack Baumann, meanwhile, had a score of 39 on the front nine.
Needless to say, the back nine was no friend of Windsor's or Maupin's, who finished with a 40 and 46, respectively. Baumann, meanwhile, charged to the front with a score of 35 on the back nine.
Tanner Green finished second on the Pirates golf team and 34th overall with a 43-55 for a final score of 98, while Eric VanderLinden finished one stroke back of Green in 36th place with a 51-48 for a final score of 99. Clayton Lang, meanwhile, finished in 39th place with a 52-51 for a final score of 103 while Morgan Johnston finished 41st overall with a 50-66 for a final score of 116. Senior Josh Vollmer finished in 42nd place with a 61-73 for a final score of 134.
