The St. Louis cardinals will be going for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon against the Washington Nationals.  After the bullpen meltdown of Sunday the Cardinals have gotten excellent pitching the last two days from both their starters and relievers especially Adam Wainright who shut out the Nationals on Tuesday night.  Wednesday afternoon’s game with the Nationals wraps up what has seemed like the longest road trip in the history of baseball but was actually only 10 games.  The Cardinals have the day off on Thursday before opening up a weekend series at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday.

The Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers are still waiting to get their series started as Tuesday night’s game was rained out.  Weather has certainly played havoc with many teams schedules in April as Major League Baseball is approaching a record number of postponements in April.  Minnesota and Colorado in particular are certainly paying in more ways than one for not spending the extra money to put retractable roofs on their stadiums.

The Kirksville High School girls track team are looking to build on the momentum of their first place finish at the tough Mexico relays last weekend as they along with the boys track team travel to Macon on Wednesday to participate in the Macon relays.  This event was originally scheduled for Tuesday but rain, wind, and cold took care of that.  Both KHS track teams appear to have a lot of depth in multiple events with the girls in particular having an awesome mix of young and veteran runners in almost every event.

The KHS boys tennis team is another team with a lot of depth and a good mix of veteran and young talent.  They have only lost three times so far this year as a team and were scheduled to be in action on Tuesday before the weather played havoc with that as well.

The Truman State baseball team has continued to improve as the season has progressed and will be at home to face Lincoln on Wednesday and Quincy on Thursday.  Pitching had been the Bulldogs weakness earlier in the year but it has been their strength as of late.

The Truman State softball team continues to play well and will be in action this weekend as they look to solidify their game in hopes of a post season run.

Congratulations to the St. Louis Blues who wrapped up a birth in the NHL playoffs by beating Colorado on Tuesday.  The Blues have been up and down this season and got off to a shaky start before righting the ship over the past month or so.  The Blues went through a period where they were scoring enough goals to win most games but weren’t playing defense and were losing high scoring games every night.  They seem to have fixed that problem but face a tough road in the playoffs against teams they have struggled with all year.

We’ll be back on Friday with a look ahead to this weekend’s sports action along with whatever else comes our way.  It looks like we will finally be seeing some spring like weather so I hope you will take the opportunity to get out and see some of our area athletes in action.  Thanks as always for supporting this and all the other blogs on this site.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
