A benefit will be held Sunday, April 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall for long time Pirate Radio Network and KWRT announcer Dane Gregg who has recently been undergoing treatment for cancer and heart issues. A lunch of spaghetti and salad, bread and dessert will be served between 12-2:30 p.m. A live auction will begin at 3 p.m. The suggested donation will be $7 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Children three and younger eat free.
Close friend to Gregg, Aletha Odneal, is chairing the benefit. Odneal said Gregg and his wife Jackie were some of the first people she got to know after moving to Boonville 32 years ago. She said the generosity she learned with them is the same generosity she wants to give back to them when they need it most. Odneal said the benefit is intended to help Gregg and his family in their time of need since they have helped so many others in need.
"Dane suffered two heart attacks and since has been having blood pressure problems. After being admitted to the hospital for further testing the doctors discovered he had esophageal cancer. A plan of treatment was established and began. During the treatment his feeding tube became infected and he was admitted again and another scan was done, only to find out this week that the cancer had spread. Right away Dane said he wanted to fight it with all he had so the doctors changed there plan of attack and have chosen to treat the cancer rapidly," Odneal said.
Odneal said Gregg and and his family's hearts are bigger than their bodies. "Dane has been involved in Habitat for Humanity, served on the board for the food bank and of course is the DJ on KWRT where he is loved by many," Odneal said.
Odneal said 100 percent of the food has been donated for the benefit, which is enough to feed 500 people. Odneal has also designed Team Dane T-shirts to sell with all of the proceeds going to the Gregg family.
"Cancer is not contagious but my fighting spirit is, is the slogan we will be using for Dane as we continue to cheer him on until he beats this cancer," Odneal said.
