  • As the second smallest school in the Moberly Invitational at Heritage Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, the Boonville Pirates golf team had high hopes of finishing somewhere in the middle of the pack against a field of eight teams.
Of course it didn’t help that Boonville had to play on a rain-soaked course with temperatures barely reaching the mid 40s.
As it turned out, the Pirate golfers had one of their least productive tournaments by finishing eighth out of eight teams in the large division.
Hannibal captured first in the tournament with a score of 309, followed by Moberly in second place at 322, Fulton third at 334, Rock Bridge fourth at 347, Mexico fifth at 352, Kirksville sixth at 353, North Callaway seventh at 353 and Boonville eighth at 366.
Boonville Pirates golf coach Seth Pirtle said he thought the team could have played much better.
“I think the weather on Tuesday made for a difficult day,” Pirtle said.  “This is the same course that NCMC and Districts will be at so it was good to get in a round and see how hard the course can be.”
On a day when playing conditions were less than favorable for the golfers, sophomore Brett Windsor may have surprised even himself by finishing ninth overall with a 9-over par 79.
Par for the 18 hole course at Heritage Hills is 70.
Jordan Mehaffy of Moberly won the individual title by virtue of a scorecard playoff by finishing the tournament tied with Alec Abel of Hannibal with a 5-over par 75.
Kory Masek of Fulton placed third with a score of 76, followed by Scott Cockrell of Hannibal in fourth place with a score of 77, Daniel Collier of Moberly fifth with a score of 77, Jack Baumann of Hannibal sixth with a score of 78, Justin Vann of Fulton seventh with a score of 78, Cody Whiston of Hannibal eighth with a score of 79, Brett Windsor ninth with a score of 79 and Justin Menard of North Callaway 10th with a score of 81.
As for the rest of the Boonville golfers, Tanner Green finished 20th overall with a score of 86 while Eric VanderLinden carded a score of 94 to finish 31st overall. Clayton Lang, meanwhile, was six spots back in 37th place with a score of 107 while Morgan Johnston finished 38th overall with a score of 109.
A total of 41 golfers participated in the large division while 52 competed in the small division.
Nineteen teams also made up both divisions.
In the small division, Salisbury captured the team championship with a score of 346. Eugene finished second at 350, followed by Marceline at 351, Brookfield fourth at 352, Milan fifth at 369, Moberly’s JV sixth at 410, Cairo seventh at 415, Scotland County eighth at 436, Westran ninth at 436, Harrisburg 10th at 466 and Glasgow 11th at 516.
