For some unknown reason, the Boonville Lady Pirates soccer team seems struggle on the road against the Mexico Lady Bulldogs.
So last night while playing at Mexico, it didn’t come as a surprise that the Lady Pirates fell in a close game by a score of 5-4.
While the loss dropped Boonville to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the NCMC, head coach Tim Brown said its something about going to Mexico because neither the Boonville girls nor boys play well when they travel there. “Even when we manage to score, we forget to play defense, or we just get blown out altogether,” Brown said. “For example, our last-two times there, we’ve scored five goals, but we let the same girl from Mexico score on us seven times.”
Such was the case last night as Mexico opened the game with a goal at the 8-minute mark to go up 1-0. Then, after Boonville answered with a goal at the 16-minute mark on an assist from Bailey Pfeiffer to Kayla Cotton to tie the match at 1-all, the Lady Bulldogs came back with another goal at the 40 minute mark to lead at the break 2-1.
The second half was just as close as the first, with Mexico scoring first at the 42 minute mark to go up 3-1 only to have Boonville rally back with back-to-back goals at the 43 and 57 minute mark. At the 43-minute mark, senior McKenna McAreavy assisted Kelly Vest to cut the lead to 3-2. Then, at the 57  minute mark, McAreavy assisted Cali Jo McAreavy on a sister to sister goal to tie the match at 3-all.
The Lady Pirates never got any closer to taking the lead in the match as Mexico came back with two more goals at the 62 and 76 minute mark to extend the lead to 5-3. Then, at the 78 minute mark, senior Allie Dowling assisted Sophia Taube to closeout the scoring.
Mexico also finished the match with 27 shot attempts and 14 shots on goal while Boonville had 22 shot attempts and 13 shots on goal.
The Lady Pirates also had eight fouls in the match compared to seven for Mexico.
Junior goalie Cassidy Renfrow, meanwhile, finished the match with eight saves.
In the JV match, Boonville defeated Mexico by a score of 1-0 by scoring the game’s only goal at the 14 minute mark on an assist from Alyssa Dell to Toni Butler.
Coach Brown said the JV Lady Pirates dominated play from the first whistle, but were only able to score one goal. “Luckily, one was enough,” Brown said.
The Boonville JV soccer team finished the match with 29 shot attempts and nine shots on goal while Mexico had three shot attempts and nine shots on goal.
The Lady Pirates, 2-2-1 on the season, also had seven fouls in the match compared to two for Mexico.
As for saves, freshman Haylee Thomas had two for the Lady Pirates.
