SS Yellow Stone sails up the Mighty MO

Steamboats were a great means of transportation during he early 1800s, but when ascending the Missouri River, one could only go as far as Council Bluffs, Iowa. At least until 1832. On March 26, 1832, the American Fur Company left St. Louis on the SS Yellow Stone and sailed 1800 miles up the Missouri River to the mouth of the Yellowstone River. The return trip was even more eventful--the steamboat averaged 100 miles per day.
