The Boonville and St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls sixth grade basketball teams had a great start in the opening round of the Bunceton 5th-6th Grade Basketball Tournament last night.
While the Boonville Splash defeated Jamestown 25-11, the St. Joseph Lady Cougars edged Bunceton in a close game by a score of 23-22.
Boonville coach Brett Cooper said the Lady Splash got a jump start in the first quarter when point-guard Jalyn Schnetzler drained a three-point shot which set the tempo for the rest of the game.
Turnovers were a large part of the game, Cooper said, as Boonville was able to force several while pressing the Lady Eagles during the first half of play.
“We really had a balanced attack tonight,” Cooper said. “We had eight of our nine girls find the bucket and several of those came from our girls controlling the boards and getting the rebound. We know in order to be successful we have to work harder than the other team in rebounding the ball. Tonight we were successful.”
Jalyn Schnetzler paced all scorers in the game for Boonville with eight points while Sydney Quint and Katie Cooper added four points each.
As for the St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls, they actually trailed Bunceton 7-2 after one, 14-8 at the half and 22-14 after three quarters of play before rallying with a 9-0 advantage in the final period.
Emily Schupp had 19 points and seven rebounds for St. Joseph. Maci Twenter chipped in four points and six rebounds while Adrianna Day added five points, Grace Goehman four and Cassie Grandestaff and Natalie Rentel each with two.
For Bunceton, Taylor Burnett tossed in 11.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Joni Schupp said with 5.4 seconds left in the fourth the Lady Cougars had the ball on the sideline. Emily Schupp then drove to the basket, Schupp said, and was fouled with 2.9 seconds to go. “She went to the free-throw line and made the front end of a one and one,” Schupp said. “This put us behind by one (22-21). Emily missed the second free throw attempt but we got the rebound, a shot went up by Maci Twenter and as the buzzer sounded the ball went thru the net.”
