  • The Pilot Grove girls and the Ss. Peter & Paul boys took home titles over the weekend in the 39th annual New Franklin 5th-6th Grade Tournament.
While the Lady Tigers edged the Boonville Splash in a nailbiter 18-17, the Warrior boys upended Pilot Grove for the title by a score of 40-32.
In other games in the tournament, the Slater girls won third place over New Franklin's A-team 13-7 while the Fayette boys upended New Franklin's A-team in the third-place game by a score of 18-15. Meanwhile, in the consolation finals, Fayette girls defeated Glasgow 13-11 while the Slater boys beat Glasgow 25-15. In the seventh-place games, the Ss. Peter & Paul girls won 20-6 over New Franklin's B-team while the New Franklin B-team boys finished two better than Boonville's fifth grade team 6-4.
In the girls championship game, the Boonville Splash led Pilot Grove 13-8 at the half and 17-13 after three quarters of play but was outscored 5-0 in the final period to suffer the loss.
Melanie Wolfe had the high game for Pilot Grove with seven points. Chloe Schlotzhauer chipped in four while Kylee Sprick added three and Alexis Reuter and Taylor Renfrow each with two.
For Ss. Peter & Paul, Jacey Felten had six, Katie Cooper five, Jalyn Schnetzler four and Sydney Quint with two.
Sprick also hit a buzzer beater right before the half to change momentum for Pilot Grove.
According to Boonville coach Brett Cooper, the Splash led by as much as eight during the game and didn't give up the lead until the last minute of the fourth quarter when Pilot Grove connected on an outside shot to put them ahead by one with less than 40 seconds to play. Cooper said Boonville then got the opportunity to attack the basket but a last second shot by Katie Cooper fell short to give the Lady Tigers the victory.
"This was a tough loss four our girls," stated Cooper. "Pilot Grove has a good team and have been playing together for a couple of years. They are a good match up for any team. We really came out well early this evening and put up eight points on the board in the first quarter, but Pilot Grove was not going to let us take this win and held us scoreless during the fourth quarter. They were able to shut down our penetration and were able to capture more rebounds in the fourth quarter."
Meanwhile, in the boys championship game, Ss. Peter & Paul led Pilot Grove 21-12 at the half and 31-20 after three quarters of play. Then, in the final period, Pilot Grove rallied back with a 12-9 advantage.
Reece Lang led the scoring attack in the game for Ss. Peter & Paul, 10-0 on the season, with 23 points along with two rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Ss. Peter & Paul coach Kevin Lang said the boys are really playing well right now.
"Kellen and Zack did a nice job rebounding and keeping a bigger Pilot Grove team from getting second shots," Lang said. "Reece did a nice job pushing the ball up the court and scoring for us. This team always plays hard and are fun to watch."
For Pilot Grove, Bailey Quint tossed in 14 while Cole Meisenheimer and Braxton Kempf contributed six points each.
