The Boonville girls and the Ss. Peter & Paul boys sixth grade basketball teams moved one step closer to the championship in the 39th annual New Franklin 5th-6th Grade Basketball Tournament last night.
While the Boonville girls edged Slater 9-7 in a thriller, the Ss. Peter & Paul boys prevailed over the Fayette Falcons 32-20.
In other games in the tournament, the Fayette girls beat New Franklin’s B-team 31-4 while the Slater boys upended New Franklin’s B-team 23-7.
Tournament action will continue tonight, with the Ss. Peter & Paul girls playing New Franklin’s B-team at 6 p.m. in the seventh-place game, followed by the Boonville fifth grade boys battling New Franklin’s B-team in the seventh-place game at 6:50, Glasgow girls versus Fayette in the fifth-place game at 7:40 and Glasgow boys versus Slater in the consolation finals at 8:30.
On Saturday, New Franklin’s A-team girls will play Slater in the third-place game at 1 p.m., followed by New Franklin’s A-team boys versus Fayette at 1:50, Pilot Grove girls versus Boonville in the championship game at 2:40 and Pilot Grove boys versus Ss. Peter & Paul in the title game at 3:30.
Jalyn Schnetzler led the team in scoring with five points while Katie Cooper and Jacey Fenton added two points each.
Boonville coach Brett Cooper said the girls played a tough defensive battle against Slater.
“Neither team were able to move the ball very well so it came down to the final quarter of play to decide the winner,” Cooper said. “We will need to do a better job on offense Saturday afternoon in order to play with Pilot Grove for the championship.”
Cooper said the Boonville girls faced Pilot Grove earlier in the season in the finals of the Pilot Grove Tournament and lost by six points.
As for the Ss. Peter & Paul boys, they trailed Fayette 9-7 after first period’s end before rallying back with a 10-4 advantage in the second quarter to go up at the half by a score of 17-13. However, in the third quarter, Fayette rallied back with a 7-3 scoring edge to tie the game at 20-all. But even that was short-lived as Ss. Peter & Paul had its best quarter in the fourth by outscoring the Falcons 12-0 for the victory.
Ss. Peter & Paul coach Kevin Lang said the boys did a nice job limiting their turnovers against Fayette’s half-court trap and rebounding. “Our defense did a nice job also,” Lang said. “This was a good win against a good Fayette team.”
Reece Lang led the scoring attack in the game for Ss. Peter & Paul with 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.
Kellen Brownfield finished the game with 10 points and five rebounds while Zack Watring added five points, 12 rebounds and two assists, Josh Chrisman with three points, five rebounds and one assist, Sam Esser with two points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists and Quin Gentry with three rebounds and one steal.
For the Fayette girls, Jennifer Nelson led the Lady Falcons with 10 points while Karli Warner and Haley Washburn each had two points for New Franklin’s B-team.
As for the Slater boys, Drew Drummond tossed in nine points while Tate Burch led New Franklin’s B-team with four. Austin Riley had two and Andy Neal one.
