The Ss. Peter & Paul boys and Boonville girls fifth and sixth grade basketball teams moved one step closer to the championship in the 39th annual New Franklin 5th-6th Grade Tournament Tuesday night.
While the Boonville girls defeated Fayette in a nailbiter 17-15 in overtime, the Ss. Peter & Paul boys had a little easier time against Slater with a 30-16 victory.
In other games Tuesday night in the tournament, the Fayette boys defeated New Franklin’s B-team 51-6 while the Slater girls upended New Franklin’s B-team by a score of 23-6.
The Boonville girls trailed Fayette 10-8 after three quarters of play before rallying back with a 7-5 advantage in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 15-all. Meanwhile, in overtime, Boonville outscored Fayette 2-0 for the victory.
Boonville coach Brett Cooper said point-guard Jalyn Schnetzler took control in the fourth quarter by scoring five of the team’s seven points. Meanwhile, in overtime, Cooper said MJ Goff put up her only two points of the night but it was the game-winning 15 foot jump shot with less than a minute left.
“MJ always has the potential to be that spark for the team,” Cooper said. “She came in and took the opportunity by sinking that 15 foot shot. After hitting the game winning shot on the other end of the floor she made the final steal of the game to keep the Lady Falcons from being able to put up a shot to tie the game. We had a lot of fun tonight and the girls never lost their composure. We had several girls who played very well on defense and worked hard on rebounding the ball. This was a team effort and I’m proud of our team.”
Jalyn Schnetzler had the high game for Boonville with seven points while Katie Cooper chipped in five, MJ Goff and Sydney Quint each with two and Josie Robb with one.
For Fayette, Emma Hoover had eight points.
