Lady Dragons closeout the 2012-13 campaign at 24-3 overall
After two cancellations, the Bunceton Lady Dragons basketball team finally got its game in last night in a Class 1 Sectional game at Harrisonville High School.
Although it took a good two hours to make the trip to Harrisonville, the Lady Dragons also had to deal with the unknown of never facing the Drexel Bobcats. Unfortunately for Bunceton, they were never able to get in-snyc while falling to Drexel 56-22.
While the loss dropped Bunceton at 24-3 overall, head coach Mike Arnold said his team looked satisfied winning the district championship last week against Otterville. “Drexel just out-played us,” stated Arnold, “but it was a good season. The kids had a great year and played hard.”
Trailing from the opening tip-off against Drexel also had its pitfalls, which forced Bunceton to play from behind pretty much the entire game. Of course after falling behind 11-5 after first period’s end, Bunceton could manage little offensively after that while scoring only four points in the second stanza to go in at the half down 23-9. The second half was a carbon copy of the first-two periods as Drexel dominated Bunceton in every facet of the game while outscoring the Lady Dragons 33-13 to win the game by 34.
As for the scoring in the game for Drexcel, Jacy Bolton had 23 points and Lauren Campbell 11.
For Bunceton, junior Maddy Berwanger finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, two stealds and two assists. Rachel Emde had nine points, eight rebounds and one steal while Julia Kahle added three points, four rebounds and two steals. Also contributing in the game for the Lady Dragons were Sam Brandes with four rebounds and two steals, Erica Kahle with four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Deanne Emde with three rebounds and two assists and Becky Fredrich and Morgan Wieland each with one rebound.
The Lady Dragons also had a horrid night shooting the ball while hitting only 6 of 57 shots from the field for 11 percent and 6 of 11 from the foul line for 55 percent.
Drexel, 21-8, will now move on to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament on Saturday, March 2nd at Clinton High School against Walnut Grove, 27-2. Walnut Grove defeated St. Elizabeth 78-52 in a sectional game.
