February 22, 1889
President Cleveland signs Enabling Act of 1889
On February 22, 1889, President Cleveland signed the Enabling Act of 1889. This Act divided the Dakota Territory into North and South Dakota. it also allowed both of them, along with Montana and Washington, to form constitutions and state governments which would in turn allow them to be admitted as states into the Union.
