The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team have had its share of tough losses this season and last night’s 55-49 setback against the Mexico Lady Bulldogs was no exception.
While leading by one (42-41) going into the final period, the Lady Pirates picked the wrong time to go cold while starting the quarter 0 for 3 from the field. Mexico, meanwhile, opened the final period with back-to-back threes to push the lead to six, a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
Boonville coach Jaryt Hunziker said it was another tough loss after being so close but overall loved the players’ effort.
“A few missed shots and key turnovers down the stretch hampered us,” Hunziker said. “Last time we faced Mexico they connected on 11 three-pointers so we switched to our man defense which limited them to only five makes tonight. I thought we really took on the challenge of stepping up and defending a much quicker, guard oriented team. Offensively we made multiple shots from the outside which has been sort of our weakness this season. It was nice to see them fall especially when we needed them so bad at the time. The team has been hit with the flu lately so hopefully we can get healthy since we have three games over four nights this week.”
Although Mexico swept the season series against Boonville, the Lady Pirates hung in there flu and all for the first half while trailing 14-11 after first period’s end and 25-19 at the break. Of course it didn’t help that Boonville started the game with four turnovers or by missing its first-two shots.
Nonetheless after playing to two ties in the first quarter, the Lady Pirates rallied back for their first lead of the game at the 4:49 mark in the second period after a basket by sophomore Addy Reardon to make it 17-16.
Then to make it a three-point ballgame, junior Cassidy Renfrow hit a two to give Boonville’s its biggest lead of the ballgame at 19-16.
Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, they had no answer for Mexico after that while allowing the Lady Bulldogs to go on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to lead at the half 25-19.
Of course the best was yet to come for Boonville. Although Mexico would take a 10-point lead (37-27) with 4:34 left in the third period, the Lady Pirates rallied back with a 9-0 run over a span of 79 seconds to go up by one at 37-36. Meanwhile, after battling back and forth for the rest of the period, the Lady Pirates took the lead after a three at the buzzer by junior Aly Wessing to make it 42-41.
Unfortunately for Boonville, they never led after that as Mexico came out and reeled off seven straight points in the final period to go up 48-42 never to trail again. The Lady Bulldogs also outscored Boonville 14-7 in the fourth quarter.

Morgan Edwards finished the game with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds along with two steals.

The Lady Pirates also finished the game hitting 20 of 55 shots from the field for 36 percent and 3 of 8 from the foul line for 38 percent.
