New Franklin’s JV boys and girls basketball teams picked up a sweep last night at home against the Pilot Grove Tigers by the scores of 48-42 and 38-21, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed Pilot Grove 10-7 after first period’s end but rallied back with a 31-11 advantage for the rest of the game for the victory.
New Franklin coach Chris McGowan said he thought his team played very well in their last JV game of the year.
Roxe Hendrix had the game-high for New Franklin with 12 points. Brittany Anderson, Jordan Winningham and Abagail Prewitt each had six while Molly Lyons and Kaitlin Dobson chipped in four points each.
For Pilot Grove, who dropped to 1-6 on the season, Allison Weekly chipped in seven, MaKenzie Twenter six, Rileigh Grunden four, Cynthia Brumback two and Katelyn Renfro and Kayla Poulsen each with one.
Pilot Grove coach Landon Daniel said his team played decent for two quarters but struggled to score in the other two and had way too many turnovers on offense.
As for the New Franklin boys, they led Pilot Grove 26-20 at the half but was outscored 18-11 in the third quarter to trail by one at 38-37. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 11-4.
McGowan, who also coached the JV boys for head coach Jim Schlotzhauer, said this game was competitive throughout. “We had some defensive lapses and had trouble with transition defense at times, but we were able to get a few defensive stops when we really needed them,” McGowan said.
Jake Hendrix paced all scorers in the game for New Franklin with 12 points. Zach Evans tossed in nine while Ronnie Perkins and Cody Wells added six, Adam Harris and Kaleb Anderton each with four, Jacob Woodbury with three and Kenneth Boggs with two.
For Pilot Grove, Regan Meisenheimer finished the game with 13, Scott Blank 12, Brandon Brown eight, Alex Twenter six and Ben Glenn three.
Pilot Grove coach Rick Grunden said New Franklin in a game that went back and forth the Bulldogs pulled away with free throws in the end. “We did some great things during a third quarter run, but in the end it was New Franklin’s night,” stated Grunden.
Pilot Grove’s varsity basketball team will host the Prairie Home Panthers in CCAA action on Friday starting at 6 p.m. The New Franklin boys and girls, meanwhile, will travel to Glasgow for a CAC matchup on Friday starting at 6 p.m.
