  • No thriller this time as Lady Dragons beat Jamestown by 10, 65-55

  • Bunceton boys fall short against Jamestown, 80-71

  • After their last meeting in the championship in the CCAA Tournament back on Saturday, Jan. 26, the Bunceton Lady Dragons basketball team had no reason but to expect another close game Friday night at home against the Jamestown Lady Eagles.
    While winning 66-64 in a back and forth game in the last meeting, the Lady Dragons came out and took care of business early against the Lady Eagles on Friday for a convincing 65-55 victory.
    As for the Bunceton boys basketball team, they also put up a good fight against Jamestown minus starter Jacob Clevenger while falling by a score of 80-71.
    The Lady Dragons, improving to 17-2 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA conference, outscored Jamestown in three out of four quarters of play and led 36-24 at the break and 51-38 after three quarters of play. However, in the final period, Jamestown had its best quarter of the ballgame by outscoring Bunceton 17-14 to make it a 10-point ballgame.
    Bunceton coach Mike Arnold said the girls came out and played very well on both ends of the court. “We still need to do a better job of finishing the game against a good team,” Arnold said.
    Junior Rachel Emde led the Lady Dragons with a double-double for Bunceton with 27 points and 12 rebounds. She also had two assists and one steal.
    Maddy Berwanger, meanwhile, finished the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists. Erica Kahle added 10 points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal while Julia Kahle had nine points, five rebounds, five steals and one assist, Sam Brandes with six points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals and Deanne Emde with two points, two rebounds and one steal.
    The Lady Dragons also finished the game hitting 27 of 54 shots from the field for 50 percent and 10 of 22 from the foul line for 45 percent.
    For Jamestown, Alli Muri and Makayla Strother each had 17 points.
    As for the Bunceton boys, they trailed Jamestown 38-29 at the half and 62-45 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Dragons outscored the Eagles 26-18 to cut the lead to nine.
    Bunceton coach Yancy Cody said the kids played hard. “Again we got down early and just couldn’t get back,” Cody said. “These kids never quit playing.”
    Trevor Barbour led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points.
    For Bunceton, who dropped to 7-12 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA, Kyler Tucker finished the game with 26 points along with four rebounds and two assists. Aaron Clevenger had 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one assist while Ashton Campbell added 11 points, three rebounds and one assist, Will Twenter with 11 points, two rebounds and one assist and Kyle Held with eight points, nine rebounds and one assist.
