Ministerial Alliance holds annual chili cook off

Area churches will have their chance to showcase their best chili recipe on Sunday, January 27. The Third Annual Boonslick Ministerial Alliance Chili Cook-Off will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Radio Hill Road and will take place between the hours of 5-7 p.m. A pie and cake auction will commence at 6:15 p.m. Roy Stevens and the EZ Tunes will be providing music.
Money from the dinner will be used to benefit the community. A release from the Alliance stated with recent lay-offs in the community and the need to draw on these funds (called benevolency funds) for local families in financial difficulty is increasing. Funds may be requested for utility help, gasoline, etc.
The event began in 2004 behind the barber shop of Jim Edwards who thought it was time to have a fun event rather then just give money in a collection basket. The cook off soon out grew its location and so in 2007 the event moved to the Saints Peter and Paul Church basement. In 2010, the event moved to the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Edwards said the Knights have been wonderful and are greatly appreciated because they help out wherever needed. He also said Stevens and his band EZ Tunes donates their time in providing music for the event.
This year the cook off will not only feature chili but also soup entries. Winners are chosen by the people enjoying the food. The winners for the past years have been the Firm Foundation Foursquare Church, Community of Christ Church and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A traveling plaque is awarded to the winning church, which the church gets to keep for one year until the following year.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, which will also be a voting ballot for the chili and soup. Individuals may also vote more than once by purchasing more tickets. Tickets will be available at the door: $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-12, while children under five eat free.
The Ministerial Alliance consists of members from many of the churches in the community who meet once a month to work together for the mutual good for the community. Their projects include fundraisers and community worship services for Holy Week and Thanksgiving. Monthly meetings are held at the Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church at 11:30 am on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
A release from the alliance stated the financial need in the community is increasing, and this event is a fun opportunity to come together to support the alliance effort. Everyone is welcome to come and share in this wonderful cause.
