The St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys junior high basketball team outscored Latham 7-4 in the first quarter and never looked back for a 44-9 win Thursday night in Pilot Grove.
The Cougars, improving to 17-5 on the season, led Latham 23-7 at the half and 36-9 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, St. Joseph Pilot Grove outscored Latham 8-0.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Jeff Wessing said in the Cougars final home game they met a very young Latham team, which gave them the opportunity to play the young players. “We were able to give them some valuable court time during this game,” Wessing said. “Now we have to get ready for the first round of the St. Peters Tournament in Marshall.”
Brady Rentel led the Cougars with 14 points along with seven rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal.
Parker Schuster finished the game with a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds along with one steal while Anderson Twenter added nine points, three steals, two rebounds and one assist, Layne Wessing with four points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist, Kale Day with three points, five steals and three rebounds, Jared Schupp with two points, four rebounds and one steal and Layton Streck with one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot.
For Latham, Ike Meloy tossed in nine points.
