  • Bunceton boys and girls win at Malta Bend

  • The Bunceton boys and girls basketball teams had one of those games where everybody saw action and contributed in the win against the Malta Bend Tigers last night in CCAA action at Malta Bend.
    While the Lady Dragons defeated Malta Bend 62-12, the Bunceton boys were just as dominating while prevailing over the Tigers by a score of 71-34.
    The Lady Dragons, 11-1 on the season, led Malta Bend from the opening tip-off and took a 46-2 lead at the half. Meanwhile, in the second half, Bunceton outscored Malta Bend 16-10 to win the game by 50.
    Bunceton coach Mike Arnold said the girls came out and played well. “Everybody contributed,” Arnold said. “We have to continue to keep getting better at both ends of the court.”
    Junior Rachel Emde led the Lady Dragons, who finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field and 33 percent from the foul line, with 15 points along with seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.
    Maddie Berwanger tossed in 14 points along with three steals, two rebounds and one assist while Julia Kahle added 10 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals, Erica Kahle with 10 points, two steals, two assists and one rebound, Deanne Emde with four points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist, Sam Brandes with four points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists, Lexus Chapman with three points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist and Morgan Wieland with two points and four rebounds.
    As for the Bunceton boys, they led Malta Bend 30-7 after one, 35-16 at the half and 74-23 after three. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Tigers rallied back with a 12-7 advantage.
    Bunceton coach Yancy Cody said the boys moved the ball well against Malta Bend. “We came out with lots of intensity and played that way for four quarters,” Cody said. “Dylan Custer came off the bench and played well.”
    Senior Jacob Clevenger led the Dragons, 5-7 on the season, with 22 points and 15 rebounds for a double. He also had three assists and one steal.
    Kyler Tucker finished the game with 21 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals while Will Twenter added 14 points and 12 rebounds along with two assists,Dylan Custer with nine points, five rebounds and three assists, Aaron Clevenger with five points and 11 rebounds and Kyle Held with four points, six assists and five rebounds.
    The Dragons also finished the game hitting 31 of 70 shots from the field for 44 percent and 10 of 16 from the foul line for 63 percent.
    The Bunceton girls, the No. 1 seed in the CCAA Tournament next week in Bunceton, will play fourth-seeded Prairie Home in the opening round on Monday, Jan. 21 starting at 8 p.m. As for the Bunceton boys, the No. 3 seed, they will take on No. 2 Jamestown on Tuesday, Jan. 22 starting at 8 p.m.
