  • Cougars fall to Cole Camp Lutheran in title game at St. Andrews

  • The St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys junior high basketball team finish second in the St. Andrews of Tipton Tournament over the weekend while losing to Cole Camp Lutheran in the championship game by a score of 44-16.
    The Cougars, who dropped to 14-5 on the season, trailed Cole Camp Lutheran 26-10 at the half and 36-14 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Cole Camp Lutheran outscored St. Joseph Pilot Grove 8-2.
    St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Jeff Wessing said the Cougars met a bigger, strong and faster team in Cole Camp that they just couldn’t handle. “Our shots weren’t falling because we were rushing them and we had way too many turnovers,” Wessing said. “Our boys fought hard until the final buzzer sounded but we were just out-muscled in the end.”
    Brady Rentel, who finished the game 8 for 8 from the foul line, led St. Joseph Pilot Grove with 12 points along with seven rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and two assists.
    Parker Schuster had two points, eight rebounds and one blocked shot while Jared Schupp chipped in two points, Kale Day with three rebounds, Anderson Twenter with one rebound and one steal and Layne Wessing with one rebound.
    Of course to get to the championship, the Cougars defeated the host team earlier in the day by a score of 45-33.
    St. Joseph Pilot Grove led St. Andrews 22-19 at the half and 33-26 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Cougars held a 12-7 scoring edge to win the game by 12.
    “We are still having a problem getting off to a good start and our turnovers are still a major issue,” Wessing said.
    Brady Rentel finished the game for the Cougars with 16 points along with five rebounds, five blocked shots, four steals and four assists.
    Parker Schuster had a double-double with 13 points and 19 rebounds along with five steals and two blocked shots while Layne Wessing added seven points, three steals, one rebound and one assist, Anderson Twenter with five points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots, Kale Day with two points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist and Jared Schupp with two points, two rebounds and one steal.
    For St. Andrews, Brayden Renfrow had 17 and Brock Bookout with 16.
