Lady Cougars fall to St. Andrews, 33-27
The St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys junior high basketball teams picked up two more wins by beating Applewood of Sedalia 33-19 on Monday and St. Andrews of Tipton 38-17 on Tuesday.
In the game against Applewood, the Cougars led 20-13 at the half and then held a 13-6 advantage in the final-two periods for the victory.
St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Jeff Wessing said the boys were able to get back on track and work on running their offense. “Turnovers are still our biggest problem and something we need to work on,” Wessing said.
Parker Schuster had 19 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead St. Joseph Pilot Grove. Brady Rentel finished the game with six points, four assists, two rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal while Layne Wessing added six points and one rebound, Anderson Twenter with two points, one rebound and one steal, Jared Schupp with four rebounds, Layton Streck with one rebound and one steal and Kale Day with one steal.
As for the game against St. Andrews, the Cougars opened the game with a 16-10 lead at the half and then outscored their opponent 22-7 in the second half for the victory.
Wessing said although the score doesn’t show it. St. Andrews is a scrappy little team. “We still need to work on our rebounding and turnovers,” Wessing said. “We will need to play a much sharper game Thursday against Latham.”
Brady Rentel had the game-high for St. Joseph with 12 points along with five rebounds, five blocked shots and one steal.
Parker Schuster finished the game with eight points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots while Jared Schupp added six points, seven rebounds and one steal, Kale Day and Anderson Twenter each with four points, three rebounds and one steal, Layne Wessing with two points, two rebounds and one blocked shot and Layton Streck with two points and one rebound.
For St. Andrews of Tipton, Brock Bookout had seven, Braydon Renfrow four and Jake Gengler, Derek Lassler and Dalton Weaver each with two points.

Alyson Brandt burned the nets for a game-high 19 points, leading the St. Andrews of Tipton girls past St. Joseph Pilot Grove in junior high action Tuesday night in Tipton.
St. Andrews led St. Joseph Pilot Grove 18-11 at the half and 28-20 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, the Lady Cougars rallied back with a 7-5 scoring edge.
Celine Dodson led St. Joseph Pilot Grove with 13 points along with two rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot. Marissa Day finished the game with 10 points four rebounds and two blocked shots while Emily Schupp added four points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, Isabella Heckman with 11 rebounds, Karsyn Kraus with five rebounds, two steals and one assist, Madeline Goehman with one rebound and Maci Twenter with one blocked shot.
