The Pilot Grove boys and girls basketball teams picked up two much needed wins at home Tuesday night by beating the Westran Hornets by the scores of 61-49 and 58-53, respectively.
The Lady Tigers, improving to 4-9 on the season, had their hands full early on against Westran while playing to a 9-9 tie. However, in the final period, Pilot Grove matched Westran point for point with 19 to win the game by five.
Pilot Grove coach Landon Daniel said he knew the girls could finish a close game eventually and tonight was our night.
“We came into the game wanting to work on getting more steals, more rim shots along with our open threes, and grabbing every board, and we did fairly well at accomplishing our goals,” Daniel said. “Westran is a team that will hang around and sneak up on you if you let them and they put a good run on us at the end of the game but we held on a finished a game with a win. We still have to become a more physical team and not get pushed around or have the ball taken away from us, but we are getting better every day and that’s what you shoot for. Kerigan Wessing and Melissa Schlotzhauer both had a stellar night for us, and Cynthia Brumback really stepped up and played well tonight as well on both sides of the ball.”
Kerigan Wessing led the Lady Tigers with 24 points, six steals, four rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
Melissa Schlotzhauer also had a good night with 20 points, four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot while McKalie Lorenz added five points, five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot, Cynthia Brumback with four points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, Rachel Lorenz with four points and two rebounds, McKenzi Schuster with one point, three rebunds, two assists and two steals and Allison Weekly with one steal.
For Westran, Chevy Ingebritson had 21 while Mackenzie Hombs and Haylie Hombs chipped in eight points each.
As for the Pilot Grove boys, they led Westran 13-11 after one, 31-22 at the half and 49-36 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, Westran outscored the Tigers 13-12 to cut the lead to 12.
“Defensively we did a better job on the front end of our press,” stated Grunden. “It led us to some easy points and allowed us to make a statement early in the game. However, we had several lows to match our highs. At times we still don’t have the control we need to play a complete game. Both defensively and offensively we still have too many hiccups.

Those two doing what they do best, allowed our offense to be a threat from multiple points on the floor. We will take some time in the next two days to work out some kinks in the chain and prepare to meet up with Bunceton on Friday.”
Kendall Kraus led three players in double figures for Pilot Grove, 12-3 on the season, with 22 points. Mason Schlotzhauer chipped in 20 while Dylan Twenter added 10, Regan Meisenheimer four, Colton Glenn three and Jake Leverton with two.
