Boonville girls basketball coach Jaryt Hunziker wasn’t the least bit happy with the effort or intensity Saturday in the third-place game against Fulton in the California Invitational Tournament.
Having already defeated Fulton 54-36 at home, Hunziker said the Lady Pirates allowed Fulton to get offensive boards and penetrate their zone all day.
“We have to have more FIGHT in our game,” Hunziker said. “Offensively, we did move the ball pretty well but just couldn’t get our shots to fall like they did the night before.”
Of course Saturday’s game was a far cry from Friday’s game against Jeff City’s JV. While shooting 60 percent from the field and 67 percent from the foul line in a 75-43 win over Jeff City on Friday, the Lady Pirates came back and hit on only 37 percent of their shots from the field against Fulton while connecting on only 50 percent from the line.
But even while struggling from both the field and foul line against Fulton, the Lady Pirates still managed to keep the game close while playing to a 11-11 tie after first period’s end. Meanwhile, in the second quarter, Boonville battled through some inconsistencies on the offensive end while outscoring Fulton 11-10 to lead by one (22-21) at the break.
While struggling to rebound the ball against a much smaller Fulton squad in the first half, the Lady Pirates also allowed the Hornets to penetrate the middle in the second half. But even with the lack of defense at times, Boonville was still able to turn a five point deficit at 31-26 with 3:50 left in the third quarter to a one-point ballgame at 33-32 after back-to-back baskets by Aly Wessing and Cassidy Renfrow.
The Lady Pirates also had their chances in the final period after rallying to tie the game at 36-all at the 4:24 mark after sophomore Addy Reardon hit 1 of 2 foul shots. Unfortunately for Boonville, they never got any closer in the game as Fulton came back with a 7-4 scoring edge for the rest of the game for the victory.
Freshman Sloane Totta led the Lady Hornets with 14 points while senior Stephanie Hughes netted 11 and Bailey Mitchell seven.
For Boonville, who dropped to 6-7 on the season, Morgan Edwards had 17 points, eight rebounds and one steal.
Aly Wessing finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist while Addy Reardon added eight points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal, Millie Moyer with two points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal, Cassidy Renfrow also with two points, six rebounds and one steal, Olivia Imhoff with three assists, two rebounds and one steal and Carley Esser with two rebounds.
As for the game against Jeff City’s JV, the Lady Pirates jumped out to stay while leading the Jays 42-19 at the break and 61-32 after three quarters of play. Boonville also held a 14-11 advantage in the final period.
Hunziker said after watching an athletic Jeff City JV team play Moberly to a 16-point game, the Lady Pirates knew they couldn’t take this team for granted.
“They love to push the ball and shoot a lot of threes but also use their tall posts and their inside game,” Hunziker said. “One thing we focused on was to come out and establish the tempo and take control of the game by halftime. The girls did a great job of this behind both Morgan and Aly’s double digit points. One area that I was disappointed with was our defensive rebounding, we gave up too many second and third chance opportunities. The girls played great team ball with all seven girls scoring on the night and a total of 20-plus assists dished out. We also had three girls end up scoring in double digit points.”
Junior Aly Wessing had the game-high for Boonville with 21 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Morgan Edwards finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist while Addy Reardon added 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, Millie Moyer with seven points, six rebounds and one assist, Cassidy Renfrow with six points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist, Olivia Imhoff with six points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal and Carley Esser with four points, three assists and two rebounds.
For Jeff City’s JV, Alli Haug had 14 points and Madison Hart with 13.
