  • The LSE girls junior high basketball team couldn’t have asked for a better ending last night on the road against the Mexico Bulldogs.
With a chance to improve to 13-3 on the season, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a 8-2 first-quarter lead against Mexico and never looked back for a convincing 32-9 victory.
Of course LSE coach Emily Allsop couldn’t be happier with the way the season ended.
She said the girls made an excellent defensive stand, holding Mexico to single digits. “We finished with a record of 13-3, and I am very proud of their hard work all season,” Allsop said.
While holding a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Hawks came out and struggled offensively in the second quarter while putting up only four points. But even then LSE still managed to lead Mexico at the break by a score of 12-7. Meanwhile, in the third quarter, the Lady Hawks played perhaps their best quarter of the season both offensively and defensively by outscoring Mexico 14-0 to extend the lead to 26-7. Then, in the final period, LSE held a 6-2 advantage to win the game by 23.
Paige Peterson and Camryn Monteer each had 11 points in the game for LSE. Peterson also finished the game with two rebounds and one steal while Monteer added two rebounds and two steals.
Leigha Vollmer added three points and three rebounds while Kate Peterson had three points, two rebounds and one steal, Kyla Johnson with two points and five rebounds and Brynn Edwards with two points, three rebounds and one steal.
For the game, the Lady Hawks hit on 12 of 40 shots for 30 percent and 5 of 7 from the foul line for 71 percent.
For Mexico, Taylor Brown had four points and Sydny Hull with three.
In the B-team game, Mexico defeated LSE in a close game 19-16.
Shayann Potter led the Lady Hawks with seven points while Brianna Walker chipped in four, McKenna Stumph three and Blake Allison with two.
The B-team girls also finished the season with a winning record at 4-2 overall.
As for the LSE boys, they also won against Mexico 39-28.
The Hawks, who closed out the season at 9-7 overall, led Mexico 22-11 at the half and 32-22 after three quarters of play. Meanwhile, in the final period, LSE outscored the Bulldogs 7-6 for the victory.
LSE coach Terry Luster said this was a great way to end the season with a good win over Mexico. “The kids played hard,” Luster said. “We passed the ball well and handled Mexico’s pressure,” Luster said. “This team improved from the start of the season to the end in every aspect of the game. I am very proud of the accomplishments.”
