  • The Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team had the Moberly Spartans within its sights last night in the opening round of the 19th annual California Tournament.
Having lost to Moberly earlier in the season by a score of 67-53, the Lady Pirates figured the second time around would be much better. But little did they know that they would be trailing the Spartans 15-4 after first period’s end. However, after shaking off the cobwebs from a long lay-off, the Lady Pirates came back and outscored Moberly 37-27 for the rest of the game before suffering a one-point loss by a score of 42-41.
In the only other game last night in the tournament, top-seeded California defeated fourth-seeded Fulton 63-39.
Tournament action will continue for the girls on Wednesday, Jan. 9, with the California Lady Pintos battling Southern Boone at 6 p.m. and Moberly squaring off against Jeff City’s JV at 7:30.
On the boys side of the bracket tonight, California will take on Boonville at 5 p.m., followed by Mexico versus Versailles at 6:30 and Fatima versus Fulton at 8.
Boonville girls coach Jaryt Hunziker said after not having a game in three weeks, the girls came out flat on offense with Morgan (Edwards) scoring our only four points of the first quarter.
“We seemed to settle down and after switching to our man defense we started to chip our way back into the game,” Hunziker said. “Our inside game was a lot better this time against Moberly. We had good looks all not from high percentage areas. We had some opportunities down the stretch to take the lead but didn’t capitalize on them. We just need to make sure we don’t dig ourselves a hole from the beginning from now on. After a rough first quarter we outscored Moberly 37-27.”
The Lady Pirates also cut into Moberly’s lead in the second quarter while outscoring the Spartans 8-2 to make it a five-point ballgame at 17-12. Meanwhile, in the third quarter, Moberly came back and held a 13-11 advantage to extend the lead back to seven at 30-23. With eight minutes to make up for the seven-point deficit, the Lady Pirates fell just short while outscoring Moberly 18-12.
As for the scoring in the game for Boonville, Morgan Edwards had 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Olivia Imhoff finished the game with seven points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist while Cassidy Renfrow added four points, six rebounds and one steal, Aly Wessing with three points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists, Millie Moyer with three points, two steals and one rebound and Addyson Reardon with two points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Lady Pirates also finished the game hitting 18 of 50 shots from the field for 36 percent and 4 of 7 from the foul line for 57 percent.
