In one of the toughest tournaments of the season over the weekend at Excelsior Springs, the Boonville Pirates wrestling team may have also wrestled some of its best matches while returning with two second place finishes and one third.
With two different pools in the tournament, freshman Brandon Ashpaugh finished second in the black pool in the 120-pound weight class with a record of 2-1 while senior Kyle Cook placed second in the gold pool in the 220-pound weight class with a record of 3-1 overall. As for sophomore wrestler Kenan Johnson, he also competed in the black pool and finished 2-2 on the day in the 126-pound weight class.
Boonville Pirates wrestling coach Christian Stock said this is a very competitive tournament. “You had better be on your A game for this tournament,” Stock said. “I felt like the three placers wrestled well, but there was room for improvement. The wrestler that I thought wrestled the best on the weekend but did not have the best record was Andrew Broyhill. He was the only wrestler in his bracket that was unranked in state in Class 2-3. He lost to the Class 2 No. 1 wrestler and the Class 3 No. 1 wrestlers by the scores of 3-2 in both matches. He wrestled very fundamentally sound this weekend. I hope he can continue to wrestle in the same manner the rest of the season. He defeated Brennan Dixson of Moberly, a conference opponent, 11-3.”
As for Ashpaugh, he opened the tournament with a loss to Derian Inlow of Moberly by fall in 2:37 but rebounded with back-to-back pins against Eric Palmer of St. Joseph Benton in 38 seconds and Brie Mileo of Webb City in 3:16.
Cook, meanwhile, won his first-two matches by pins against Levi Marlay of Cameron in 51 seconds and Will Simpson of Excelsior Springs in 3:26. Then, after losing a close decision against Colden Denisar of Lawson in the third match by a score of 10-8, Cook came back and won his fourth and final match against Bryson O’Callaghan of Savannah 6-2.
As for Johnson, he struggled in the first-two rounds while losing by falls to Brett Rider of Excelsior Springs and Logan Dietz of Lawson in 1:19 and 3:57, respectively. However, in his next-two matches, Johnson came back with a 4-2 decision over Alex Parker of Grain Valley and a fall over Dakota Morris of Cameron in 1:40.
In other weight classes, Andrew Broyhill finished 2-3 in the 152-pound weight class while competing in the gold division while  Austin Hulbert sported a record of 1-4 in the black division in the 138-pound weight class. Dylan Snapp was 0-3 while competing in the black pool at 145 while Rory Concannon was 0-5 in the gold division at 132. Junior Nolan Murray also finished 0-5 in the black pool in the 285-pound weight class.
In the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Rookie Roundup on Saturday, the Pirates JV team had two medal winners with Morgan Browning placing second in the 126-pound weight class and Andrew Garrison finishing second at 152.
The Boonville Pirates wrestling team will travel to Moberly for a conference match on Tuesday, Jan. 8 starting at 6 p.m. Then, on Saturday, Jan. 12, the Pirates will compete in the Warsaw Tournament starting at 9 a.m.
