  • John Ed Derendinger, 71, of Boonville, passed away unexpectedly at Boone Hospital Center on Monday, Dec. 31st, 2012. Visitation for John Ed will be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Boonville on Friday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 o'clock. Funeral services will be held at the church on Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock with burial following at Walnut Grove Cemetery. John Ed was born August 5, 1941 to John Rudolph and Edna Sophia Stock Derendinger of rural Boonville. He was the second born of four children. He spent his whole life farming on the century family farm. He married Mary C. Gerhardt in June of 1964 and they are the parents of two children, Penny Cain and Tammy Poulsen, both of Boonville. In 1967, he attended the Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa , which began his 45-year career as an auctioneer in Boonville and surrounding areas. Through this profession, his love of people and desire to serve them grew and inspired him to give his time and talent to the benefit of others. John Ed served on numerous boards, including the MFA Exchange, MFA Livestock and MFA Oil Company boards, as well as the ASC and FSA boards for over 33 years, and the Cooper County Jail Building Committee, and the Cooper County Public Facilities Authority. John Ed was honored to receive the Service to Agriculture Award in 2008 as well as the Chamber of Commerce President's Award. He sold 4-H livestock at the Cooper County Fair and emceed the pedal pull. He helped raise money for the Boonville Band Boosters at their annual pie auction, most recently being awarded a plaque as an Honorary Conductor, having raised over $100,000 to benefit the band program during nearly two decades. He assisted the auctions to benefit the Boonville and Prairie Home Lions Clubs and Saint Peter and Paul fundraising. John Ed also used his talents to raise money at Boonville's Relay for Life and participated in many benefit auctions for local families in medical and financial need. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he and Mary attended and enjoyed serving in several capacities. He was preceded in death by both parents, John and Edna Derendinger, one brother, Kenneth Derendinger and a grandson, Jacob Poulsen. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the Home, two daughters, Penny Cain (Gordon) and Tammy Poulsen (Clint); seven grandchildren, Meagan Alpers (Nathan) and Shain Waibel (Sandra) both of Prairie Home, Cody Waibel and Kayla, Lucas, Brooks and Grace Poulsen, all of Boonville and two Great-grandchildren, Logan Waibel and Paige Alpers, both of Prairie Home as well as two sisters, Jane Johnston (Gil) of Park Ridge, Illinois and Doris Dace (Rev. Jim) of Pocahontas, Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews. His unique voice, the way he could tell a story, his willingness to give and his one-of-a-kind personality will truly be missed by everyone. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
