The Boonville R-1 School Board opened their Wednesday meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Superintendent of the Boonville School District Mark Ficken said they will be reviewing all policies and procedures with the Boonville Police Department and Cooper County Sheriff's Department on January 3, 2013.
Ficken has asked the Boonville Police Department to make regular stops around each building of the district. He also said several people have relayed their safety concerns. He said the district is doing all they can to make each school the most secure place for the children.
Charles Johnson, of the Mid-Missouri Drug Testing Collection, gave a presentation to the board on drug procedures and what he recommends for testing. He talked about the different forms of testing such as urine, hair and saliva.
"Urine is the most accepted in samples," Johnson said.
He went into further detail in saying hair is used in long term testing since the drug cannot be tested until it starts to show up in the hair growth. Saliva, he said, is more of a short term test, which can only be tested within hours of the individual taking the drug.
"This is a very technical driven science. The instruments are very expensive, which can do about 1,000 tests in an hour," Johnson said.
He said the process is entirely computer driven. The only human intervention includes putting the sample in the machine for testing. After the sample is tested, a graph is read. Johnson said when looking at a testing product, one must decide the best product. He also said not all products are the same. He recommends not only testing for drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, but also testing for prescription drug abuse, K-2 and bath salts. When asked about price, he said a test for all these was no more than $60.
