The St. Joseph Pilot Grove girls junior high basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit after three by outscoring High Point 15-2 in the final period for a 31-25 victory Monday night at High Point.
The Lady Cougars, improving to 8-5 on the season, trailed High Point 11-6 after one, 18-10 at the half and 23-16 after three quarters of play before rallying back in the final period.
Emily Schupp had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist to lead St. Joseph Pilot Grove.
Marissa Day finished the game with eight points, five rebounds, three steals, three blocked shots and one assist while Isabella Heckman added four points, nine rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Karsyn Kraus with four points, five rebounds and two blocked shots, Celine Dodson with three points, six rebounds and two steals and Madeline Goehman with one rebound.
As for the St. Joseph Pilot Grove boys, they fell against High Point by a score of 32-28.
The Cougars led High Point 14-12 at the half but was outscored 20-14 in the final-two periods to suffer the loss.
Despite the loss, St. Joseph Pilot Grove coach Jeff Wessing said this was one of the Cougars best games of the season. “The boys were flat and we just couldn’t get a basket to fall,” Wessing said. “We fought to the end, but with two players in foul trouble at the half we had to step it up and we just couldn’t pull it off. High Point just flat out-played us.”
Brady Rentel had eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and one blocked shots for the Cougars, who dropped to 11-4 overall.
Parker Schuster finished the game with seven points, 12 rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and one assist while Layne Wessing added five points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist, Kale Day with four points, Jared Schupp with two points, six rebounds and one steal and Anderson Twenter with two points, two rebounds and one steal.
