Take away the first and fourth quarter of Saturday’s game against Sedalia Smith-Cotton in the W-K Holiday Shootout at State Fair Community College in Sedalia and the Boonville Lady Pirates basketball team wins 25-11 instead of losing by a score of 39-34.
With three games in six days, the Lady Pirates struggled shooting the ball against Smith-Cotton while hitting just 39 percent of their shots from the field and only 33 percent from the foul line.
Smith-Cotton also jumped out on top in the first quarter by outscoring Boonville 13-5. However, in the second period, the Lady Pirates rallied back with a 15-6 advantage to lead by one at 20-19. Boonville also held a 10-5 scoring edge in the third quarter to extend its lead to 30-24. However, in the final period, the Lady Tigers rallied back and outscored Boonville 13-4 to win the game by five.
Boonville girls coach Jaryt Hunziker said the team came out flat and Smith-Cotton held a 13-5 in the first, but then we picked up the intensity after switching to man defense.
“Our ball movement was stagnant after Smith-Cotton did a good job of taking away our inside game but Addy (Reardon) got us going by knocking down a couple of threes in the second,” Hunziker said. “After taking a one-point lead into half, we extended our lead to six after three quarters behind some drives by Aly (Wessing) and a couple of easy baskets by Morgan (Edwards). During the last quarter we let Greer get too many easy drives to the basket and we went cold from the field by only putting up four points.”
Jacqueline Greer had 11 points, Elana Sharpe nine and Megan Lollis eight for Smith-Cotton.
For Boonville, Aly Wessing finished the game with 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Addy Reardon chipped in 10 points, three rebounds and two steals while Morgan Edwards added seven points, five rebounds, one steal and one assist, Millie Moyer with four points and three rebounds, Olivia Imhoff with two points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists and Cassidy Renfrow with three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
