The Bunceton Lady Dragons basketball team picked up where they left off over the weekend after capturing first in the Northwest of Hughesville Tournament by beating the Higbee Tigers 48-18 in CCAA action Tuesday night at Bunceton.
The Lady Dragons, one of the surprise teams in the area at 6-1, outscored Higbee in the first-three quarters and led 15-7 after one, 32-11 at the break and 46-13 after three. Higbee held a 5-2 advantage in the fourth.
Bunceton coach Mike Arnold said the Lady Dragons came out sluggish but picked it up as the game went along. "We must learn to play four quarters," Arnold said. "If we don't these next-three games, Otterville, Sacred Heart and Prairie Home will give us trouble. It's up to me to figure it out."
Erica Kahle and Rachel Emde each had 14 points to lead Bunceton. Emde also pulled down 16 rebounds for a double-double while dishing out two assists and one steal. Kahle, meanwhile, finished the game with three steals, one rebound and one assist.
Sam Brandes added eight points, five rebounds, six steals and four assists while Maddy Berwanger chipped in eight points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal, Deanne Emde with two points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists and Lexus Chapman with two points and one rebound.
For Higbee, Clare Hope had nine points.
As for the Bunceton boys, they also inched closer to the .500 mark for the season by turning back Higbee 48-39.
The Dragons, 3-4 on the season, trailed Higbee 21-19 at the half before rallying back with a 29-18 scoring edge in the final-two periods.
Bunceton coach Yancy Cody said the boys played extremely hard and worked the ball around better on offense. "I was very proud of the boys for getting out first home victory of the year," Cody said. "We need to build off this win and continue to improve."
Senior Jacob Clevenger led three players in double figures for Bunceton and also finished with a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. He also had three assists.
Kyler Tucker had 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists while Ashton Campbell added 13 points and nine rebounds, Kyle Held with three points, seven rebounds, six assists and one steal, Aaron Clevenger with two points and one rebound and Will Twenter with seven rebounds, two steals and two assists.
For Higbee, Austin Nelson tossed in 15 points while Mateo Dias had 11.b
